Specialty Eye Care
We provide a range of non-routine services designed to address specific ocular health concerns, from chronic dry eye and myopia management to medical eye assessments and surgical co-management. Our approach focuses on evidence-based diagnostics and personalized treatment plans to manage complex eye conditions.
Dry Eye Assessment and Treatment
If you experience persistent dryness, irritation, or fluctuating vision, we offer a structured dry eye evaluation. This process is led by Dr. Kristin Heeney and involves a multi-step diagnostic approach to identify the underlying cause of your symptoms.
Our Assessment Process
- Symptom Review: We begin by reviewing your specific symptoms and environmental triggers.
- Clinical Examination: A detailed anterior segment exam and tear film assessment are performed.
- Advanced Diagnostics: When indicated, we use meibography (infrared imaging) to evaluate the structure and function of the meibomian glands.
In-Office Treatments
For patients diagnosed with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), we provide TempSure Envi treatments. This is a non-invasive thermal radiofrequency procedure that uses heat to unblock meibomian glands and help restore the lipid layer of the tear film.
Advanced dry eye diagnostics and TempSure Envi treatments involve fees beyond a standard eye exam and are typically not covered by OHIP, though they may be eligible for third-party insurance reimbursement.
Light Sensitivity and Migraines (Avulux)
Avulux lenses are designed for people whose migraine is triggered or worsened by light.
Specialty Contact Lenses (Scleral Contacts)
Scleral contact lenses are custom-designed lenses that can be used for hard-to-fit corneas and complex vision needs.
Digital Eye Strain (Kids and Adults)
Screen time can contribute to symptoms like tired eyes, headaches, dryness, and trouble focusing.
We assess how screen use is affecting your eyes (or your child’s eyes) and recommend practical adjustments, lenses, or follow-up where it helps.
Myopia Management
We offer a dedicated program for children and teens to monitor and manage the progression of nearsightedness. Led by Dr. Ema Hazra, our myopia management program utilizes axial length measurements to track eye growth over time and assess the effectiveness of interventions.
Treatment Options
- Specialty Spectacles: MiyoSmart and Stellest lenses.
- Specialty Soft Contact Lenses: MiSight and Biofinity multifocal lenses.
- Orthokeratology (Ortho-K): Overnight lenses designed to reshape the cornea temporarily.
- Pharmacological Intervention: Low-dose atropine eye drops.
Program Structure
Myopia management typically involves ongoing monitoring and follow-up appointments, with repeat measurements to track changes over time.
Medical Eye Care and Red Eye Policy
We provide same-day care for medical eye issues such as red eyes, infections, or sudden irritation.
If you are experiencing severe symptoms—including significant pain, extreme light sensitivity (photophobia), or sudden vision loss—we advise you to contact our office directly by phone before attempting to book an appointment online. This allows us to triage your condition appropriately.
Referrals and Co-Management
When your condition requires surgical intervention or specialized medical management beyond the scope of primary optometry, we maintain referral pathways to ophthalmologists.
We also provide co-management services for patients undergoing procedures such as LASIK or cataract surgery, ensuring you receive appropriate pre-operative and post-operative care within our clinic.
Insurance and Billing
We accept OHIP for eligible visits.
For services not covered by provincial health care, we offer direct billing to many common Canadian private insurers, provided your specific plan supports it.
Because coverage varies significantly between providers, we recommend verifying your benefits for specific diagnostic tests or specialty treatments prior to your appointment.
