Ortho-K

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is a specialized service we provide to help you achieve clear daytime vision without the need for glasses or daytime contact lenses. Ortho-K uses custom-designed rigid gas permeable lenses worn overnight to gently reshape your cornea. The corneal reshaping is temporary and reversible.

Quick guidance

  • If your child has myopia: Ortho-K lenses can slow myopia progression by about 50% on average while also providing clear daytime vision without glasses.
  • If you want glasses-free days: Wear the lenses overnight and remove them in the morning. No glasses or contact lenses needed during the day.
  • If you are active in sports: Ortho-K is especially popular with young athletes who need clear vision without the hassle of daytime lenses.

Candidacy and consultation

We primarily use Ortho-K for two purposes:

  • Correcting refractive errors in adults who prefer not to wear lenses during the day
  • Slowing the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children and teens

Ortho-K is especially popular for active lifestyles and sports because the lenses are worn overnight and removed in the morning.

For children and teens, Ortho-K works best for mild to moderate myopia. During your initial consultation, we perform detailed corneal topography to map the surface of your eye. These measurements are essential for designing your custom lenses and determining whether your prescription and eye shape are suitable for treatment.

Ortho-K and myopia control

Ortho-K lenses are widely used for the purpose of slowing the progression of myopia. Ortho-K lenses can slow the progression of myopia by, on average 50% in children, compared to those wearing single vision spectacles or contact lenses.

Studies such as CRAYON looked at children between 8-15 years old and compared the myopia control effects between ortho-k lenses and single vision soft contact lenses. Children who wore ortho-k lenses for 2 years had less axial length growth compared to their peers wearing single vision contact lenses.

The fitting process and timeline

Once we determine you are a candidate, the fitting process begins. You will receive a pair of custom-designed lenses and instructions on how to insert, remove, and care for them.

  • First night: You wear the lenses overnight for the first time.
  • Initial adaptation: Most patients notice a significant improvement in vision within the first few days, though it may take 1–2 weeks of consistent nightly wear to reach full, stable correction.
  • Follow-up schedule: The fitting fee includes all necessary follow-up visits to optimize your fit. We typically schedule evaluations:

- The morning after your first night of wear

- At 1 week

- At 1 month

Lens care and maintenance

Because Ortho-K lenses are rigid gas permeable lenses worn overnight, strict hygiene is required.

  • Clean and disinfect your lenses every morning upon removal using the specific solutions we recommend.
  • Lenses are typically replaced annually.

Police service applicants (Ontario)

The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) lists orthokeratology as not allowed under its vision standard for constable applicants.

Because the corneal reshaping reverses when you stop wearing Ortho-K, discontinuing means a period of shifting vision before things settle, so it is worth raising before a fitting rather than after.
