# Contact Lenses

We provide comprehensive contact lens services at our downtown Toronto clinic, ranging from initial fittings for first-time wearers to specialty solutions for complex prescriptions. Our approach ensures that your lenses provide clear vision while maintaining the long-term health of your eyes.

Comfortable contact lenses require more than a prescription. We assess eye health, tear film, and lens fit, then recommend options that match how you live and what your eyes can tolerate.

Because contact lenses are prescription medical devices, contact lens selection, fitting, and patient management are part of your optometrist’s clinical decision making.

## Who we help

- People who want comfortable, reliable daily contact lenses
- Contact lens wearers with dryness, redness, or end-of-day discomfort
- High prescriptions, astigmatism, or multifocal needs
- Patients who have been told they cannot wear contacts
- Complex eyes, including keratoconus, corneal irregularity, post-surgical corneas, and other challenging fits

## The fitting process

Contact lens assessment is typically done as part of a comprehensive eye exam. While the exam evaluates your overall ocular health and determines your prescription, contact lens care also involves evaluating the eye’s surface and tear film so the lens can be worn safely and comfortably.

During contact lens evaluation and fitting, we assess:

- The curvature of your cornea
- The health of your tear film

For those new to contact lenses, we include a dedicated training session. During this appointment, we teach you the correct techniques for lens insertion and removal, as well as essential hygiene and care protocols to help prevent infections.

## Lens options and modalities

We fit a wide variety of lens types based on your lifestyle needs and ocular requirements:

- Daily disposables: Single-use lenses replaced every day, offering a high level of convenience and hygiene.
- Bi-weekly and monthly lenses: Lenses cleaned daily and replaced on a set schedule (every two or four weeks). Often a cost-effective choice for full-time wearers.
- Toric lenses: Designed for patients with astigmatism to help ensure stable, clear vision.
- Multifocal lenses: Address presbyopia, helping you see clearly at both near and far distances without the need for reading glasses.
- Specialty lenses: For complex prescriptions and for patients with dry eye syndrome who may have had difficulty wearing standard lenses in the past.

We also fit specialty lenses for complex prescriptions and challenging eyes, including scleral lenses and rigid gas permeable lenses.

## Trials and follow-up care

To support the best possible outcome, we utilize a trial lens process. After the initial fitting, you will typically be provided with a trial supply of lenses to wear in your daily environment. This allows you to evaluate comfort and visual clarity over several days.

We schedule follow-up visits to monitor how your eyes are responding to the lenses. During these appointments, we check for any signs of irritation or physiological changes to the cornea.

If the initial trial lenses are not performing optimally, we will make adjustments to the prescription or lens type until a successful fit is achieved.

Once the fit is finalized, we provide you with a contact lens prescription that is valid for ordering your full supply.

## Fees and insurance

In general, standard contact lens fitting and management is included in your annual comprehensive eye exam.

This does not apply to Ortho-K or scleral lens fittings, which are specialty services with their own fitting process and fees.

Some services are not covered by OHIP and may be eligible for reimbursement through third-party insurance. Coverage varies by insurer and policy.

## Before your appointment

Bring your glasses (even if you wear contacts most of the time).

If you wear contacts, bring the box or blister pack (or the lens details) and your current solution.

If you have dryness or irritation, tell us what drops or treatments you have tried.

## Lens care and replacement

Maintaining a strict replacement schedule is vital for eye health. We provide specific guidance on how long your chosen lenses should be worn and when they must be discarded.

For non-daily lenses, we instruct you on the proper use of cleaning solutions and the maintenance of lens cases to help minimize the risk of complications.
